"IT IS THE DUTY OF EVERY CITIZEN ACCORDING TO HIS BEST CAPACITIES TO GIVE VALIDITY TO HIS CONVICTIONS IN POLITICAL AFFAIRS"
- ALBERT EINSTEIN
Those who are familiar with all the gray areas of the law (also referred to as the elephant in the room) and all of the legal limbo that consumes Van Houten's case, often say that she is a political prisoner, not by definition however. She is denied because of the media exposure that her case still receives. There are several people in the justice system, mostly elected officials that hold positions of higher authority and decide the fate of others. Unfortunately, these are often based on popular opinion, not the law. They all took the same oath- that is proven meaningless any time when claiming Leslie Van Houten is a current danger to society. So it isn't just Debra Tate to blame. However, when it comes publicity and the media, she is the main individual (if not the only one) responsible for it- but it is enough. As with any sensationalized case - especially a decades old case - there is little to no veracity in how the facts are presented, to easily manipulate public perception. Debra Tate relentlessly eviscerates Leslie's chances of freedom, but many people feel the disturbing part about Tate's actions, is the lack of sincerity by going to such extreme measures but not in the spirit of "victim's advocacy" Rather for spiteful and corrupt motives instead. In short, make the public believe a certain way, her way... and threaten politicians with there reputations if they follow the law. This is easily accomplished as all that has to be said are the words "Charles Manson" Most of society today have no clue who Leslie Van Houten is. But a 2 minute interview segment flashes on the news or in between commercials of Leslie Van Houten in 1970 with an x carved on her forehead, then of Debra Tate discussing the horrific details of her sisters tragic death as if it occurred last week, by the Manson family (not of Leslie, but she leaves that part out) it is the link that keeps her in the news under false pretenses. Also, an effective way of elevating public fear if parole were granted- thus parole is denied not based on law, facts, or evidence = political prisoner in essence.
